Theory Lessons

What do you learn?

Music theory covers all the fundamental aspects of music: rhythm, pitch and melody, notation, harmony, expression and style. You will learn about the conventions that specify how music is written down - and much more about the rich language of music.

Can I get qualified?

You can take exams in music theory which are administered by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. These exams are available at all grades (1 - 8) and are globally recognised.

Who should have music theory lessons?

You should have music theory lessons if you are learning any instrument. If you are taking higher grade (6-8) instrumental exams you will first need to pass Grade 5 Theory (or Grade 5 Practical Musicianship or Grade 5 Jazz). Although you can combine music theory with your practical lessons it is more practical, due to the inevitable time contrainsts when combining, to have separate theory lessons.
You should also have lessons if you are a musician who wants to write down your compositions. In this case a tailored course of study specific to your needs would be agreed.

How long are lessons, and how often?

You will usually have weekly lessons; these will last either 30, 40 or 60 minutes according to your wishes. There will  be some homework or study to be completed before the next lesson.

How long does it take to learn?

This will vary from person to person, but to attain Grade 5 typically takes between one and three years depending mainly on how much prior experience the student has.
